Supporting Executives
in New Leadership Positions
CONTEXT
Johnson & Johnson, a leading health care corporation, conducted
a study in response to assessments that it faced a shortage
of future business unit leaders. The study was designed to determine how well
J&J was preparing its people for future critical leadership
positions. Based on interviews with 35 J&J business leaders conducted by
16 high potential leaders, the study reported that the corporation
faced significant challenges in developing a strong bench of leaders
who were “ready now” for business unit leader positions. Many new leaders were promoted on short notice and without a clear
understanding of the rigorous demands and significant responsibilities
they faced during the first few months on the job. The findings recommended
the development of a corporate wide leadership transitions roadmap
and supporting processes for preparing newly appointed leaders.
